Mission
The Waters Edge Project – Defending and nurturing environmental ambassadors to advocate and uphold cleaner and safer coastal communities.
-
Background
Established in 2011, The Waters Edge Project is all about helping to sustain healthy coastlines and communities while providing opportunities for environmental stewardship. The project offers both water and land based learning opportunities for youth in coastal communities. The programs provide surfing clinics, beach cleanup projects and first aid classes. The three programs work together to build safer, stronger and more sustainable coastal communities.

Location
Barra de la Cruz is 25 kilometers drive from Huatulco in southern Mexico. The area is part of a larger eco-system that includes a small lagoon, astonishing wildlife and a river that leads to the beach filled with mangroves. The area is famous for its sand bar point break. This point break became famous after the Rip Curl Search event in the 2006 Men’s World Tour. Over the last few years, more tourists are visiting the area and the surf scene has grown significantly. Although this growth has brought positive economic changes to the community, eco-systems are facing irreversible damages that can be stopped by becoming proactive.

Objective
Every surfer who has had the opportunity to ride a wave at Barra de la Cruz agrees it is a magical place. The Waters Edge Project intends to give back to a place that has brought so much joy to surfers from around the globe by becoming a positive example of environmental and social responsibility.
